From selling fish in Quiapo every Saturday and Sunday, a 22-year-old young man proved that dreams can be achieved with perseverance and dedication.

Vincent Escobido, 22, is now a well-known indie filmmaker in Dubai. Known as “Vincent Augus,” he holds the distinction of being the youngest filmmaker in the area, having created over 300 films.

In a report by GMA Integrated News, Escobido shared his humble beginnings before reaching the peak of success abroad.

Before becoming a filmmaker, he spent five years helping his grandmother, Adelaida Escobido, or “Lola Deling,” sell fish. They would travel from Navotas Fish Port to Quiapo, taking three jeepney rides to reach their destination.

However, he shared that “not every day is Christmas,” meaning not every day brings good earnings from selling fish.

There were even times when their goods and buckets were confiscated during cleanup drives conducted by the local government.

In 2019, his parents, both overseas Filipino workers (OFWs), brought him to Dubai for a vacation. However, due to the pandemic, they were unable to return to the Philippines.

While working as a kitchen assistant and sales staff, Escobido was fortunate to meet Elvin Mark Santos, the head of the indie film production house TBON Dubai. This marked the beginning of his career as a filmmaker.

Escobido revealed that he had a natural passion for acting from a young age. He loved participating in school theater plays, which fueled his interest in the performing arts.

However, the journey was far from easy. He repeatedly tried out for auditions but was never accepted.

The only experience he could count as related to film was being an extra in a jeepney scene, which unfortunately didn’t make it to the final cut of the movie.

Currently, Escobido is studying IT Programming at Dubai British School while continuing to take steps toward achieving his dreams.

Escobido also dreams of creating his own full-length movie and eventually making it to Hollywood. He draws inspiration from his family and the people who have supported him on his journey to success.

From being a fish vendor in Quiapo, Escobido has now become an inspiration to dreamers. He is living proof that nothing is impossible with hard work, perseverance, and faith in God.
