Do you believe in the saying “God’s perfect timing”? It’s as if everything is meant to fall into place, but in inexplicable circumstances, things don’t work out right away. Yet, when it finally happens, it’s absolutely incredible!
That seems to be the case for Kaizen Daniel Oriel, a 24-year-old from Minglanilla, Cebu, who passed the Civil Engineer Licensure Exam in May 2022 and even placed 8th, with an impressive overall rating of 92.20%.
Kaizen, a graduate of the University of San Carlos, finished his studies in May 2020. In an interview with a local Cebu newspaper on May 12, he shared how his board exam was first postponed in November 2020 due to the pandemic.

Rather than feeling discouraged, Kaizen used the time to focus on reviewing for the next exam, scheduled for May 2021. However, that exam was also postponed because of power outages affecting various regions of the country.
This delay deeply disappointed Oriel, making him feel like the exam was simply not meant for him. He decided to work for a real estate company instead. Unfortunately, his job consumed much of his time, and he couldn’t review or submit the necessary paperwork for the November 2021 exam, resulting in yet another missed opportunity.
Oriel recalled that he had always dreamed of becoming a civil engineer since he was a child, driven by his passion for Math. Though he didn’t graduate with honors, he was proud not to have any failing grades.
Finally, in May 2022, he decided to take the exam once again. Despite struggling with Math and Structural Engineering, Oriel was stunned to discover that he had ranked 8th.

In the interview, Oriel expressed his heartfelt gratitude to his parents, family, and friends, who supported him throughout his journey, particularly during his third attempt when work was taking up much of his time. His advice to future board exam takers is to take their review seriously but not to place too much pressure on themselves.
