The “One and Done” rule is a simple approach that can be applied when we have multiple tasks to accomplish or when we feel overwhelmed with responsibilities, particularly for students who are campus journalists or for people with many daily commitments.

The One and Done rule is applied when, after finishing a task, we review it once to correct any mistakes, and once we are satisfied that it’s complete, we move on to the next task or subject without revisiting the previous one.

Definition of One and Done

The concept behind the One and Done rule is rooted in efficiency and focus. When working on multiple tasks, it’s easy to become distracted or to feel the need to constantly revisit what we have done.

However, by applying the One and Done principle, we train ourselves to commit to a task, give it our full attention, and then move on without unnecessary second-guessing.

This reduces stress and helps maintain productivity.

One and done for students

For students, particularly those involved in journalism or any extracurricular activities, the One and Done rule can be a game-changer.

Students often juggle assignments, research, writing, and other responsibilities. The pressure to constantly revise or perfect every detail can be overwhelming.

By adopting the One and Done approach, students can ensure that they complete each task with confidence and without endless revisions that take away time from other priorities.

One and done for campus journalists

In the case of campus journalists, this rule can help streamline their work process. Journalists often have deadlines and need to produce high-quality work under time constraints. By focusing on finishing one article, report, or story and then moving on, journalists can maintain a steady output without getting bogged down in perfectionism or overthinking each piece. This approach ensures that the work gets done efficiently while still upholding quality standards.

For professionals in any field, the One and Done rule can improve time management. The key is to focus on the task at hand and resist the urge to revisit it unless absolutely necessary. By following this method, people can avoid spending too much time on a single task, which could ultimately delay other important responsibilities. Completing each task with full attention and then transitioning quickly to the next allows for a more balanced workload.

Another advantage of the One and Done rule is its ability to combat procrastination. Sometimes, the fear of making mistakes or not doing a task perfectly can cause us to delay it. By embracing the mindset that once a task is done, it’s done, we can free ourselves from the cycle of hesitation and indecision. This approach helps build confidence in our abilities and reduces the tendency to procrastinate.

However, it’s important to recognize that the One and Done rule doesn’t mean rushing through tasks without care. It encourages focus and efficiency, but it still requires that we put in the necessary effort and attention to detail while completing a task. It’s about striking a balance between thoroughness and efficiency. In practice, this might mean setting clear goals for each task and allowing ourselves the space to review once before moving on.

The One and Done rule also helps develop discipline and mental clarity. By setting boundaries for each task and sticking to them, we can train our minds to be more decisive and less prone to distraction. This discipline is especially important in environments where multitasking is common, and the pressure to keep moving quickly is high. It fosters a mindset that encourages getting things done efficiently, which can ultimately lead to greater success and personal satisfaction in our work.
