The Department of Education (DepEd) has teamed up with a Japanese firm to improve the math proficiency of public school students across the country.

In a significant move to improve math proficiency among public school students, the Department of Education (DepEd) has partnered with Japan-based Sprix, Inc. to offer free access to the Test of Fundamental Skills (TOFAS) for learners nationwide. This collaboration aims to help thousands of students strengthen essential math skills crucial for their academic success.

The partnership was officially sealed through a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) signing ceremony at the Bulwagan ng Karunungan in DepEd. Education Secretary Sonny Angara was joined by Hiroyuki Tsuneishi, President and Representative Director of Sprix Ltd.; Leo Shoji, Lead Development Officer of Sprix Ltd.’s Global Strategy Division; and Algrace Avancena, Chief Representative of Sprix Co. Ltd. – Philippines.

“Strengthening our students’ math skills is essential,” DepEd Secretary Edgardo Angara noted.

“With TOFAS, we have a targeted tool that identifies math proficiencies and areas for growth, and we are confident this will empower students across the country. Initial feedback from our regional directors has been overwhelmingly positive, and we’re eager to expand its use to more learners.”

TOFAS enables teachers to accurately assess students’ calculation and problem-solving abilities, providing essential data to customize instruction based on each learner’s needs. By identifying strengths and areas for improvement, TOFAS enhances communication between teachers, students, and parents, fostering a supportive environment that motivates academic progress.

In addition to its academic advantages, TOFAS contributes to student well-being by giving teachers and parents a clear view of each student’s mathematical development, paving the way for greater engagement in both mathematics and programming. “We’re thrilled to see TOFAS support students in the Philippines,” said Mr. Tsuneishi. “Our goal is to empower teachers with insights to better meet the learning needs of every student.”
