“Following in the footsteps of parents” means pursuing a similar path or career as one’s parents or taking inspiration from their achievements and values. It often implies carrying on a family tradition, continuing a legacy, or being influenced by their choices and experiences to shape one’s own life decisions.
For example, a child becoming a doctor, lawyer, or teacher like their parent demonstrates following in their footsteps. It reflects admiration and respect for the parents’ journey and often signifies a desire to emulate their success or principles.
Just like the story of Ralph Jayson Tulmo, which is both inspiring and heartwarming. A summa cum laude graduate of Medical Technology from Riverside College in Bacolod, Ralph secured third place in the March 2024 Medical Technologist Licensure Exam, echoing the achievement of his father, Wilson Tulmo, who topped the same exam 39 years ago.

Ralph scored 92.7% in the exam, where the Professional Regulation Commission (PRC) reported 7,309 passers out of 9,068 examinees.
In an interview with Rappler, Ralph shared that his parents were his greatest inspirations. His father, a neurologist, and his mother, a dentist, served as his role models in pursuing excellence. Wilson, who ranked first in the 1985 MedTech Licensure Exam, inspired Ralph to aim high and follow in his footsteps. Despite their demanding careers, Ralph’s parents never neglected him and consistently supported his dreams.
Ralph shared that he aspires to become a neurologist like his father and is determined to pursue medical school. He also admires his parents not only for their intelligence but for their humility, which he finds remarkable.
For students aiming for success, Ralph emphasized the importance of thorough preparation, hard work, and strategic thinking. He advised setting ambitious goals and pursuing them with diligence and perseverance.
In addition to his dream of becoming a doctor, Ralph expressed an interest in becoming a review lecturer for aspiring medical technologists preparing for the board exam.
