“In God’s grace, nakapagtapos po ako ng ALS at nakapasa sa pagsusuri. Dahil dito, nabigyan po ako ng bagong kredensyal upang makapag-enroll sa kolehiyo.”

The determination and family support gave Mark Joenard Bautista the courage to complete his education in the Alternative Learning System (ALS) at the School Division of Passi City in 2015, according to a report on the official Facebook page of the Department of Education (DepEd) “DepEd Philippines.”

Mark had to stop high school after being expelled from a private school due to financial difficulties. As a result, he was unable to obtain his personal documents, which prevented him from enrolling in a public school.

Mark and his mother sought help from the SDO Passi City to continue his education. “A teacher spoke to my mother and said they would help me finish high school. That teacher was also an ALS instructor and became my adviser,” he said.

Given a new opportunity, Mark continued his studies, eventually enrolling in college at Passi City College in the Bachelor of Science in Criminology program and earning his diploma in 2021. That same year, he took the Criminology Board Exam and passed on his first attempt.

Mark has shown true perseverance and dedication. He now serves the community as a member of the Philippine National Police in Region VI, specifically with the Iloilo Province Mobile Force Company, 4th Platoon. His contributions provide security and unity for a renewed Philippines.

The Alternative Learning System (ALS) is an educational program under the Department of Education (DepEd) in the Philippines designed to provide non-formal education to out-of-school youth and adults who have missed the opportunity for formal schooling. ALS aims to make education more accessible and flexible, allowing learners to acquire basic and functional literacy, life skills, and vocational skills. It aims at providing opportunities for lifelong learning and helping individuals achieve their educational and personal goals.
