The Department of Education (DepEd) and the Department of Science and Technology (DOST) formalized their collaboration on Friday to advance STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics) education in the Philippines.
The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU), which will remain in effect for four years, outlines efforts to address key areas such as teacher training, curriculum enhancement, student involvement, resource sharing, and data-driven research, all aimed at improving scientific literacy and fostering innovation in basic education.
The MOU was signed by Education Secretary Sonny Angara and Science and Technology Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr., with DepEd Undersecretary Atty. Fatima Lipp D. Panontongan and DOST Undersecretary Maridon O. Sahagun as witnesses.

“This marks a crucial step in redeveloping the science and technology curriculum, boosting student engagement, and enhancing research capabilities within schools,” Secretary Angara stated.
The partnership emphasizes fostering Filipino students’ creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving abilities, while also strengthening the professional development of STEM educators. Initiatives will include learner development programs, scholarships, and mentoring, with DOST experts directly collaborating with schools.
Teacher education and capacity-building efforts will be pivotal, ensuring that educators are equipped with up-to-date knowledge and teaching strategies for STEM education.
DepEd will lead in identifying participating schools, providing access to resources, and ensuring that initiatives align with curriculum standards and policies.
Meanwhile, DOST will assign scientists and researchers as resource persons, create teaching tools and platforms, and offer access to its facilities to support STEM learning.
Both agencies have committed to monitoring and evaluating the joint initiatives, with regular feedback mechanisms in place to ensure the effectiveness of the programs.
