Teacher Wilfred Branairos Malinog inspired netizens with a Facebook post showcasing his mother, Domingga Malinog, graduating from junior high school through the Alternative Learning System (ALS) of the Department of Education (DepEd).
What’s even more remarkable is that Wilfred himself was his mother’s teacher.
“NANAY KO, ESTUDYANTE KO!” he said on his Facebook post last May 20, 2024.
“Congratulations mudrabels, ALS Graduate @ the age of 67..May purpose gid ang Ginoo kung ngaa gintransfer ako sa ALS❤️❤️❤️.”

In an interview, Wilfred revealed that he encouraged his mother to continue her studies. He noticed that she was always reading the modules for her students as an ALS teacher.
Studying became a source of comfort for her after the passing of her husband.
Now that his mother has graduated from high school, he plans to encourage her to pursue college.
The Alternative Learning System (ALS) is a program offered by the Department of Education (DepEd) in the Philippines aimed at providing educational opportunities to individuals who are unable to access formal schooling. ALS is designed for various groups, including:
- Out-of-School Youth and Adults: Those who have not completed their basic education due to various circumstances.
- Working Individuals: People who are employed but want to continue their education to improve their skills or qualifications.
- Those with Special Needs: Individuals who require flexible learning options due to disabilities or other challenges.
The ALS program offers different learning modalities, including:
- Self-Directed Learning: Learners can study at their own pace using modules and resources provided by the program.

- Facilitated Learning: ALS teachers guide learners through the educational process, helping them with their studies.

Upon completion of the ALS program, learners can take assessments to earn a Certificate of Completion or take the Accreditation and Equivalency (A&E) test, which allows them to obtain equivalency to a formal high school diploma. This program aims to empower individuals and promote lifelong learning in the community.
