The phrase “Heal your inner child” is often heard from Gen Z today. It refers to fulfilling the things you couldn’t do as a child for various reasons, now that you have the resources and ability to make them a reality.
For Yuan Masuda, a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry graduate from the Pamantasan ng Lungsod ng Maynila (PLM), ranking 5th in the October 2024 Chemists Licensure Examination with a score of 90.55% is not about healing, but rather a dedication to his inner child.
In an interview with an entertainment website, Masuda revealed that his fascination with chemistry began in childhood, and he eagerly delved into anything and everything related to the subject.
When he entered college, he chose a degree program aligned with his passion for chemistry. However, unlike the common financial struggles many students face, Masuda’s challenges were more centered around his social skills. He confessed that building friendships during his four years of study was a struggle for him.
“I stayed true to my goal to finish this course for my inner child who is waiting and cheering me on at the finish line,” he said.

He overcame his challenges and successfully graduated from college. While preparing for the board exam, Yuan decided to pursue a master’s degree to expand his knowledge and improve his chances of securing a higher-paying job. However, concerned that his resume might lack work experience, he chose to take on a part-time faculty role at the College of Saint Benilde.
When asked if the board exam was difficult for him, Yuan simply responded, “I kept saying the same thing: the exam felt like a breeze.”

In truth, Yuan never anticipated becoming a topnotcher. So, when the results were announced, he and his friends celebrated. He described this moment as the culmination of his college journey.
Congratulations!
